MSRA Academic Day 2017
Min attended the Microsoft Research Asia’s 10th anniversary Academic Day, held in Yilan, Taiwan, to report on the Microsoft funded work on CL-SciSumm, the corpus building and shared task organization initiative led by WING. It is a collaborative venture with Ph.D. student Muthu Kumar Chandrasekaran and Dr Kokil Jaikda (Univ. of Pennsylvania), supported by annotators from IIT Hyderabad.

Workshop on Educational and Social Science Technology 2017

Min is selected as deputy director of NUS ALSET (research)
Min has been appointed as the Deputy Director (Research) of the NUS Institute of the Application of Learning Sciences and Education Technologies. He will be working with director Prof. Dr. Robert Kamei, a pediatrician, on the NUS-wide research agenda for educational technology and learning sciences. Min is PC co-chair of ACL 2017
Min was selected as the co-chair of ACL 2017, the premier annual conference in computational linguistics and natural language processing. Regina Barzilay, of MIT, is the other co-chair. It will be held in Vancouver in late July-early August 2017. They have started a blog on the chairing process to help make the process more transparent.

ACM SIGIR Honorable Mention to Dr Xiangnan He
Our alumnus Dr Xiangnan He, along with his team in Prof. Chua’s group won an Best Paper Honorable Mention at SIGIR for their paper “Discrete Collaborative Filtering”, by Hanwang Zhang, Fumin Shen, Wei Liu, Xiangnan He, Huanbo Luan, Chua Tat-Seng.

The Joint Workshop on Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing for Digital Libraries (BIRNDL 2016)
At JCDL 2016 this year, the workshop chairs recommended that we join the NLPIR4DL workshop proposal, spearheaded by WING, with the 4th Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval workshop. We’re glad we did — we had an awesome programme that brought together IR and NLP folks to talk about all things scholarly.
The proceedings of the joint BIRNDL workshop as well as the CL-SciSumm task are available on CEUR.org as well as cross-listed on the ACL Anthology!

The CL-SciSumm Shared Task 2016
From WING, Min and Muthu worked with past CL-SciSumm Pilot Task chair Dr Kokil Jaidka to put together the CL-SciSumm 2016 Shared Task on Scientific Document Summarization. It was a great success with 9 participants and a half day proceedings featuring participating teams from Spain, India, USA, Austria, Hong Kong China, Japan and Canada.

ACM MM and SIGIR 2016 papers
Our two recent doctoral alumni have brought their theses work to completion in top-ranked conference work. Congratulations Tao and Xiangnan! Xiangnan will be in Pisa, Italy for SIGIR to present his work on “Fast Matrix Factorization for Online Recommendation with Implicit Feedback”, and our long-term visiting scientist Kaz will present our joint work with past FYP student Jerome Cheng on “Linking Organizational Social Network Profiles”. Tao earns her trip to Amsterdam in October for her work entitled “Context-aware Image Tweets Modelling and Recommendation” on her last thesis chapter’s work in exploring textual features for images in Tweets (microblog posts).
