Spring 2012 forthcoming publications

We are happy to report that our article in Language Resources and Evaluation on Crowdsourcing for NLP has finally reached the proof stage and should be published soon!  We are also preparing camera-ready publications for ACL on the summarization evaluation (AESOP) task, and on our open source plagiarism detection system and corpus for ITICSE.

Min appointed Assistant Director of NUS IDMI

Min has been appointed Assistant Director of the NUS Interactive of Digital Media Institute (IDMI).  As part of the IDMI management, Min will be helping to oversee and coordinate the activities of the (current) three Integrated Research Centres and seven labs funded by the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore.

First place by ROUGE by the TAC team

Our text summarization team of Ziheng Lin, Jun Ping Ng and Praveen Bysani achieved first place in ROUGE scores for their extractive summarization system, SWING at the recent Text Aanalysis Conference (TAC) 2011.  Look out for its release on our downloads page coming soon!  You can read about SWING’s construction in the TAC proceedings article here.

Semantics3

WING Alumnus, Sivamani Varun, has started his own startup company, Semantics3.  They are performing crawling and soon, data mining, of large data sets via Amazon EC2.  Check out their site.  As part of our team’s NExT search center, we are planning to collaborate with Semantics3 to take the grunt work out of crawling data for Singapore and Beijing.

Adam Kilgarriff visits WING

Adam Kilgarriff stopped by WING in February to give a talk/demo on the Sketch Engine, his company’s corpus exploration tool.  We look forward to more ties for SketchEngine as we work to collaborate to load the NUS SMS corpus and other corpora by the group onto the Sketch Engine for more detailed analysis.

WING Fall 2011 Hellos and Goodbyes

WING welcomes incoming PhD student Xiangnan He and welcomes back FYP students Shawn Tan and Low Wee Heng.  We also welcome new sysadmin Jason Yeo, Zhongmin Dai and Azri Yasin.

We also say goodbye to our long-lived-but-newly-minuted Dr Tan (Yee Fan), FYP student Varun Sivamani, interns Liner Yang, Sofien Lazreg, Takahiro Hisaki, Saravanan Sokkiel and sysadmins Nana Wang and James Tran.

Congratulations Dr Tan!

Congratulations go to Dr Tan Yee Fan, who defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Cost-Sensitive Web-Based Information Acquisition for Record Matching” on Thursday, 17 Nov!  He will continue to work as the Chief System Architecture at KAI Square.  Congratulations, Yee Fan!

SgCodeJam24 Finishes

The Elsevier / NUS SgCodeJam24 finishes with 15 teams presenting their applications.  We fielded three teams, and while none won any awards, we feel great about our participation and organization in the CodeJam.  We’re looking forward to next year’s competition already!
