Our alumnus Dr Xiangnan He, along with his team in Prof. Chua's group won an Best Paper Honorable Mention at SIGIR for their paper "Discrete Collaborative Filtering", by Hanwang Zhang, Fumin Shen, Wei Liu, Xiangnan He, Huanbo Luan, Chua Tat-Seng.

At JCDL 2016 this year, the workshop chairs recommended that we join the NLPIR4DL workshop proposal, spearheaded by WING, with the 4th Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval workshop. We're glad we did -- we had an awesome programme that brought together IR and NLP folks to talk about all things scholarly. The proceedings of the joint BIRNDL workshop as well as the CL-SciSumm task are available on as well as cross-listed on the ACL Anthology!

From WING, Min and Muthu worked with past CL-SciSumm Pilot Task chair Dr Kokil Jaidka to put together the CL-SciSumm 2016 Shared Task on Scientific Document Summarization. It was a great success with 9 participants and a half day proceedings featuring participating teams from Spain, India, USA, Austria, Hong Kong China, Japan and Canada. Thanks to all of the participants for making CL-SciSumm 2016 a success!

Our two recent doctoral alumni have brought their theses work to completion in top-ranked conference work. Congratulations Tao and Xiangnan! Xiangnan will be in Pisa, Italy for SIGIR to present his work on "Fast Matrix Factorization for Online Recommendation with Implicit Feedback", and our long-term visiting scientist Kaz will present our joint work with past FYP student Jerome Cheng on "Linking Organizational Social Network Profiles". Tao earns her trip to Amsterdam in October for her work entitled "Context-aware Image Tweets Modelling and Recommendation" on her last thesis chapter's work in exploring textual features for images in Tweets (microblog posts).

Congratulations to Dr Tao Chen on her successful defense of her thesis that explores the newish phenomenon of Image Tweets, with applications to news feed recommendation and image recommendation for posts. Great job, Tao!
