Xiangnan He will be going to Korea to present his work on using a co-regularization framework non-negative matrix factorization for improving recommendation system’s recommendations via  clustering, in April!  More soon!

Jun Ping honored by School

Congratulations to Jun Ping, who will be listed as a recipient of the School’s prestigious Research Achievement Award for his achievements this year.  Jun Ping published two Rank 1 (EMNLP) papers and two Rank 2 papers (COLING), and independently sourced for collaborators for a few of his projects.  Congratulations, Jun Ping!

Invited talk at IAS 2013

Min gave an invited talk at the 2013 Information Access Symposium to some 30+ researchers at the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo, Japan on 6 December 2013, entitled “The NExT Search Center: User Generated Content を解析“.  Min gave an overview of the NExT search center and also touched upon research by Tao and Jovian in WING.  Check it out!

Mobile App Recommendation at AIRS 2013

Dr Kazunari Sugiyama has been working with other Ph.D. students and interns outside of WING and has published the paper entitled “Serendipitous Recommendation for Mobile Apps Using Item-Item Similarity Graph” at AIRS 2013.  The paper was nominated for for best poster and best paper (but unfortunately, didn’t clinch either).  Congratulations, Kaz!

USM Penang visits WING

A large contingent of over 40 faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students from Universiti Sains Malaysia visited WING on 7 Nov 2013.  The visitors were treated to a special talk by the database group and also had a chance to hear about the latest research by WING through a small poster session, organized by Drs Kazunari Sugiyama and Dongyuan Lu.  WING students and staff were flattered by the attention we received from the visitors.  Thanks for you visit!

2 works reported at EMNLP 2013

WING members Jun Ping Ng and Yiping Jin reported their works at EMNLP 2013.  “Exploiting Discourse Analysis for Article-Wide Temporal Classificationexamines the use of discourse frameworks for temporal classification, whileMining Scientific Terms and their Definitions: A Study of the ACL Anthologycreated a CRF-based system to locate definitions and terms in scientific papers and applied them to the ACL corpus.

Congratulations Dr. Jesse Gozali!

Congratulations to Dr. Jesse Prabawa Gozali, for defending his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Event Photo Stream Segmentation: Chapter-based photo organization for personal digital photo libraries” successfully on 7 August 2013!  Jesse has now gone on to work at Mobilewalla Incorporated.

Congratulations Dr. Jin Zhao!

Jin finally defended his Ph.D. thesis after many years of grueling hard work, in May.  Jin’s thesis entitled “Towards Generic Domain-specific Information Retrieval” investigated how to make advances in domain-specific information retrieval without investing heavily in domain-specific knowledge engineering. Jin has been with WING since his undergraduate FYP and continues to stay on in SoC as a universally-liked instructor.  He’s transitioned away from research and is now tackling the challenges of teaching software engineering and large lecture classes.  Congratulations Dr Zhao!
