Abstract
Emojis have rapidly become a critical element in modern text communication, yet systematic study in the computational linguistics (CL) community remains sparse. Our research aims to construct a new language resource to enable language models to understand and generate emojis in a manner meaningful to humans. We focus on two key areas: (1) Considering the finite vocabulary of emojis, can we construct new emojis using pre-existing ones? (2) Given the integral role of emojis in textual communication, can we augment texts with contextually relevant emojis to boost their expressiveness and informativeness?
